Clinical Presentation
The classic presentation for patients with a vertebral compression fracture secondary to osteoporosis is:
- Acute back pain
- Onset of pain after a typical everyday activity, such as lifting a bag of groceries, or even just after coughing
- Pain that diminishes with rest
Pain from vertebral compression fractures typically lasts for a period of four to six weeks as the bone heals. For many, the acute pain will subside, but for others the pain will continue for weeks or months, especially if permanent mechanical changes or deformities result from the fracture.
