Osteoporosis can cause compression fractures in the vertebrae. These compression fractures can cause the vertebrae to collapse, to loose height, or to become misshapen. A common symptom of osteoporosis-caused compression fractures is pain.
The Aging Spine Center reports on two procedures that may be helpful in certain people suffering the pain of osteoporosis compression fractures in the spine. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty both involve injecting medical-grade bone cement into the fractured vertebra to stabilize and strengthen it. Not all people with osteoporosis-caused vertebral compression fractures are candidates for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.
